Start with PAYE, compare an all-inclusive umbrella rate, then reverse the result back to the PAYE rate needed for the same take-home.
Built on weekly 1257L tax and National Insurance with actual employer costs and pension, so you can compare like for like. Figures are illustrative.
3% employer pension + 5% worker pension (4% net deduction)
8% employer pension + 0% worker pension
How it works. This simplified public calculator uses the same weekly 1257L tax/NI and actual-cost logic as the supplied GCA framework calculator. It assumes PAYE holiday pay is included in the entered rate; umbrella is an all-inclusive invoice. PAYE uses a 3% employer pension plus a 5% worker pension paid as 4% net under relief at source. Umbrella uses an 8% employer contribution and no worker pension deduction. The take-home uplift is explicit and editable — it is not presented as a guaranteed umbrella advantage. Figures are indicative, use one standard week and exclude student loans, other deductions and VAT.
* From August 2026 the government renamed the Apprenticeship Levy the Growth and Skills Levy (G&S Levy for short). Payslips, Key Information Documents, invoices and contracts issued before the change may still call it the Apprenticeship Levy or App Levy.
